The Most Controversial Met Gala of All Times

MetGala

This year’s #MetGala theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Yes, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s held an event with religious motives in fashion. So far, it has been the most controversial event of all times. However insane it may sound, the “Heavenly Bodies” exhibition has received the official stamp of approval from the Vatican. In fact, over 150 fashion designers have worked on the creation of all those magnificent costumes. They included over 50 garments and accessories loaned from the Vatican itself. Just imagine – opulent papal robes, precious rings and tiaras from the 18th to 21st century have become a part of the Met Gala extravagant costumes for the night. Would you dare to try them on?

 Why Religious Theme?

The decision came from the curator Andrew Bolton. He wished to present his studies on religion and fashion for the last five years and was originally intending to look at Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism, as well as Catholicism. But considered it too big a topic and quite sensitive, so he decided to avoid the inevitable blunders that might occur if celebrities misused sensitive garments, causing offence on the red carpet.

“I was worried that it might be misinterpreted, that the other four religions might seem like tokens. And when the Vatican came on board, it made the imbalance even greater. So I decided to focus on Catholicism, because the body of material was stronger,” he told Observer.com.

What do we know about the History of Met Gala?

The first Met Gala was held in 1948 in New York. It was a supper of high society people to raise funds for the Costume Institute of Metropolitan Museum of Art’s.  Since then it has become an annual fundraising event.
